Fredericksburg, Virginia, has established several sister city relationships to promote cultural exchange, education, and international friendship. These partnerships are supported by local organizations and community initiatives.

🇫🇷 Fréjus, France (since 1980)

Fréjus, located on the French Riviera, became Fredericksburg's first sister city in 1980. The Fredericksburg Sister City Association (FSCA) facilitates cultural exchanges, including annual student exchange programs where students alternate visits between the two cities each year. A notable symbol of this relationship is Fréjus Place, a small park in downtown Fredericksburg featuring a sundial gifted by Fréjus to commemorate their 25th anniversary as sister cities. 

🇬🇭 Princes Town, Ghana (since 2006)

In 2006, Fredericksburg became the first city in Virginia to partner with an African city by establishing a sister city relationship with Princes Town, Ghana. This partnership aims to acknowledge shared history and promote cultural understanding. 

🇮🇹 Este, Italy (since 2015)

Este, a city in northeastern Italy, became a sister city to Fredericksburg in 2015. The Fredericksburg-Este Association supports this relationship through cultural events, language meetups, and educational programs that highlight the similarities between the two cities, such as their rich histories and vibrant arts communities. 

🇳🇵 Kathmandu, Nepal (since 2015)

Following the 2015 Nepal earthquakes, a civic-led initiative led to the establishment of a sister city relationship between Fredericksburg and Kathmandu. The Fredericksburg-Kathmandu Sister City initiative focuses on cultural understanding, community service, environmental efforts, and academic exchanges between institutions like the University of Mary Washington and Tribhuvan University in Nepal.

🇩🇪 Schwetzingen, Germany (partnership initiated in 2010)

Fredericksburg initiated a sister city partnership with Schwetzingen, Germany, in 2010. While details about ongoing activities are limited, this relationship was established to foster cultural and educational exchanges between the two cities. 

These sister city relationships reflect Fredericksburg's commitment to global engagement and cultural exchange. Each partnership offers opportunities for residents to participate in international programs and build lasting connections with communities around the world.
